What Is Enlightenment and How Do You Achieve It?

Ever since I had known about Paramhansa Yogananda, I have always longed to be "enlightened." By "enlightenment" I do not mean in the usual intellectual sense, but as a state of "yoga" or union with one's higher Self, which is very much in tune with the truth and with the manifested creation we all dwell in. The kind of enlightenment I am writing about is a permanent happiness and fulfillment above and beyond the trials and tribulations of worldly existence. Enlightenment is a freedom from addiction and the enjoyment of a kind of emotional independence or nearly perfect maturity. This whole page is about a "yoga" of meditation for enlightenment.

I am not saying or implying that I am enlightened as a "Buddha" or "Krishna" would be. I am far from perfect, and if I was perfect, why would I even bother aspiring to anything? However, I have been very interested in the subject for many, many years, and no doubt learned much about the higher yogas and everything that the task of achieving enlightenment implies in all my own serious and sincere "trial and error" attempts. I have fasted for days, lived on 100% raw food diets, been on long mountain retreats with dozens of other yogis, meditated the entire night until dawn outside in the cold non-stop, done yoga postures until I felt like a pretzel, been initiated by gurus into complex yogic exercises and various forms of meditation, and tried celibacy for as long as I could stand it.

So it seems very, very difficult at times, having to seemingly go against one's very own instincts, and practice hours and hours of sadhanna (yoga and meditation) every day which seemed to use up much more than just my spare time! No matter how hard I tried, no matter how much self-discipline I had, no matter how determined, I simply could not get anywhere. In fact, the only thing that changed was that my anxiety and depression (unfortunate tendencies of mine) gradually got worse! In the end I simply became too tired to do anything! I had to quit, otherwise there would not even be any time or energy left over for basic survival activities!

I really had to redefine where I was coming from, why I wanted "enlightenment" so badly and what it really meant to be "enlightened." I was coming from a state of desperate longing and a basic discontentment with my life and physical or earthly surroundings. I felt very limited, restricted by time, short on money, and especially limited by my body's needs and by my 100% frustrated emotional and psychological needs. It felt like I was an unwilling victim of life, and I often truly regretted being born into this side of "hell" where life on Earth definitely seemed to be at times.

"Enlightenment" as far as I was concerned, meant to be a way out of the drudgery and pain of physical existence or at least a novel perspective on life that would help me see things in a new light and gain answers to the numerous serous problems that had plagued me for years and made my life miserable. "Enlightenment" also meant having a lasting and reliable source of inner joy, bliss, guidance and love. I longed for a personal relationship with the Divine. I longed to find out whether Paramhansa Yogananda's "Divine Mother" really existed or not. Is there a part of ourselves that is immortal? Is there a life after death, and if so what it is like?

It has turned out that the kind of "enlightenment" I have been longing for requires far more elements than I ever imagined and its requirements far more complicated than I ever dreamed. Therefore I experimented with all that I learned and picked up from various sources, personal experiences, teachers, books, etc. I decided to start a journal and write down all I could regarding those aspects of yoga and meditation that worked for me. I even invented new ideas, ideals and techniques that seemed to finally provide some answers.

What I have learned so far includes the following very important principles:

1) Cultivation and redirection of sexual desire, and the expansion of sexual energy into absolute bliss, joy, inspiration and love. I have never been able to get anywhere without some form of celibacy! However simply stopping up all one's physical cravings would do more harm than good. One must carefully redirect the sexual energy upward through the spinal centers into an expanded bliss using adaptogenic herbs, short water fasts, infusion of body cells with prana (life force energy) while carefully monitoring and regulating of one's nutritional intake.

2) Don't go vegetarian without first knowing how. First avoid all red meat (pork, lamb, beef...), and replace these with turkey and chicken; and then eat fish in place of turkey and chicken. Then replace fish with cooked eggs and high protein vegetarian food sources. Most people tend to replace meats with cheese, milk and yogurt, which might work out OK for some, but most will encounter some emotional and physical difficulties in many areas of one's life. Much better substitutes for meat include fresh whole eggs, soy, almond, hemp milk, chlorella, and superfood green formulas which all contain proteins, essential oils, and certain vital brain and eye nutrients.

3) The diet and supplements taken must be perfect for the person. In order to succeed at yoga, one's metabolism must be optimized and balanced perfectly. The right supplements, the right herbs, the right food, and the right amount of daily water fasting, must be included every day so that when one sits down or simply pauses, one should feel absolutely relaxed and content. This "pleasant state" is absolutely essential just to begin yoga. Try to avoid as much solid or heavy food as possible. Instead enjoy plenty of raw fruits and vegetable juices, raw kombucha, almond, hemp, rice, oat and soy milks, etc. Avoid cheese, solid fats, oils, fried food, bread, sweet desserts, dried fruit, flower products, or anything else in the way of bulky, solid food because at best, this stuff only takes up room for more biologically valuable nutrients, and at worse, can drain vital mental and spiritual energy, speed up aging, and lead to illness.

4) Know for sure that there is life after death and that the spirit is a real entity. Just having no doubt whatsoever about the reality of Spirit and that there is a universal, eternal justice changes everything in the way one feels, acts and behaves toward life. Life no longer seems like an utterly unfair and nonsensical "hell" but is rather an opportunity to learn from mistakes and grow toward becoming a finer and finer human being. go here for more information about life after death.

5) Know without a shadow of a doubt the oneness of all life! There is only one consciousness or one observer who lives in all sentient beings. One can love others unconditionally (very important), because one now knows that all people everywhere are simply aspects of one great Self, which means one will have to experience eventually everything one does to another person. "Enlightenment" consists mainly of a constant state of unconditional love. One's state of being determines the quality of one's life.

6) Meditate regularly by focusing all one's attention at one spot one inch inside the forehead (third eye) or heart center in middle of chest. Also learn how to deep relax and at least visualize the self leaving the physical body behind. Astral projection provides first hand proof that one is not the body. The body is only a physical vehicle to get around in and the physical brain is needed for the interpretation of all events within the physical dimensions of time and space. One's true nature is space, ecstasy, love, and knowledge all embedded within a unified, but location-free, "quantum" consciousness. Identify with consciousness instead of the physical body.

7) Drink loads of fresh (preferably ionized or alkalized) water between meals instead of snacking. Exercise regularly in an external, natural environment with intent to absorb as much prana as possible into every cell of the body. Also bathe or shower regularly to keep the skin pores open to finer energy, and try to wear only clean clothes everyday because old particles tend to block the absorption and enjoyment of prana. Learn how to live more and more on zero-point cosmic energy (prana) and less and less on physical food.

"Enlightenment," as you can tell, is anything but simple to accomplish, but well worth all the trouble and difficulty once achieved. There are no short-cuts, however it is possible to discover and use more effective and direct methods which I call a kind of "yoga" for meditation. I follow all of the above steps and as a result am enjoying a lifestyle very similar to one who is considered "enlightened." However, I still am far from perfect, and have much more to accomplish. This website is an information center dedicated to the complete mental emotional, physical and spiritual fulfillment of all people everywhere.

You are reading the first and original page of this "Yoga for Meditation" website now considerably transformed and updated since its first appearance late in 2001 when it had only four pages linked to each other by the above three links! Click on any one of those and they will go to one of the other three original pages.

The purpose of this "Yoga for Meditation" website is to inspire all to live a lifestyle of WHOLENESS (living in joy) through oneness with nature, meditation, raw food, and transmutation of basic energies and emotions into love and bliss. I would embellish this lifestyle further with the practice of Surat Shabd Yoga which is a highly advanced yet relatively simple meditation technique and philosophy of life that one can choose to follow. Regular fasting on ionized water, can help purify the mind and body, hopefully leading one as fast as possible to the highest levels of spiritual realization, joy and freedom. As an example, imagine doing this, but while fasting on ionized water! I am just making suggestions, however, one must research, choose and practice something to get somewhere!

The above meditation techniques, diets, fasting, and many other paths of the "Living in Joy" lifestyle are available here and, as best I know how, are covered in an objective, non-biased way. I never say one path, method, or religion is superior to another. This site is an open knowledge-sharing support center for all sincere and open-minded truth seekers longing to further advance their spiritual nature and become less dependent on materialistic needs.

Because "Science of Wholeness" is an open-minded research site, many links to other websites and related items at amazon.com helpful and/or supportive of the subject of wholeness (living in joy) have been included throughout my web pages to provide you with more interesting, detailed, and relevant illustrations, information and resources. I use links to other sites (which open in a separate window) in my text to illustrate and support my own ideas and provide as much vital, timely and useful subject matter as possible. I will always try to keep you up-to-date with the latest available information, and linked to the most relevant and interesting websites, etc.

My intention is to encourage a philosophy of living in joy in which one finds great satisfaction through a lifestyle of higher wisdom, ever-increasing harmony within one's self and with the environment. I believe it is essential to preserve all ecological systems, and to always love and respect nature!

I am looking for ways to free ourselves from the often short-sighted, stressful and materialistic way of life that leads to mass exploitation and destruction of natural resources. If too much of the world's God-given natural beauty is lost, the quality of life for ourselves and future generations is compromised.

All cities and communities should be designed or transformed only in ways that increase one's quality of life and ability to live in joy, otherwise, what is the reason for living in the first place, if there be no easy access to peaceful, natural beauty in our lives?

Living in joy can begin with your interest in yoga (for meditation) or whatever else it takes to meditate more deeply and feel closer to God and life's purpose. Beauty in the outer environment along with its appreciation and preservation may ultimately depend on the beauty of the inner environment. The first step is to experience wholeness within ourselves through meditation, yoga, and rediscovering our profound relationship with God or Mother Nature: our Creator.



A Simple Meditation Technique

By centering one's awareness at least once a day, while sitting upright and still in a place that is peaceful and safe, one can start to feel a joy from within. It is important to be absolutely comfortable, and fully concentrated on a symbol of God without giving any attention or energy to other thoughts and desires. This is how a cluttered mind full of conflicting motivations is unified into a wondrous sense of inspiration. Meditation can be immensely enhanced by using special audio CDs and courses. Surat Shabd Yoga

For some people, this teaching might be the most direct way to God. Learn more about it here and here. One meditates on the inner sounds, the third eye and on the inner Light of God. Kriya Yoga

For a really meaningful and spiritual perspective on meditation, Kriya Yoga and religion, check out some of Paramhansa Yogananda's books, such as Autobiography of a Yogi or the free online edition of Autobiography of a Yogi. Kriya Yoga as taught by Paramhansa Yogananda and the line of gurus he came from, is a "doorway to the Infinite" or path to God and involves a much more complex meditation technique than the ones previously mentioned so far. Learn more about Kriya Yoga here. Kriya Yoga is a complex series of spiritual lessons leading up to an actual initiation into Kriya Yoga, and then there are several stages of Kriya Yoga.



Kundalini

Through understanding, loving and conserving one's sexual energy, and through a healthy lifestyle including raw food, special herbs, antioxidants, daily exercise in a natural environment, meditation, yoga and drinking loads of negatively ionized alkaline water, one can enjoy a powerful transmutation of physical desires into bliss. Staying on a healthy, raw balanced diet is important for a safe and fulfilling kundalini awakening. Most aspects of poor mental and/or physical health can be overcome by the careful conservation of vital sexual fluids, transmutation and expansion of sexual energy into higher centers and levels of expression, and eating mainly a diet high in complete balanced protein, raw food, raw juices, herbs, antioxidants, and plenty of minerals and trace elements, especially calcium and magnesium, while enjoying plenty of exercise! Regular water and juice fasting and meditation outside in a peaceful, natural setting can dramatically aid in the process of blissful kundalini awakening.

Why is it so desirable to raise in the first place? Why bother? What can kundalini do for you? What can be the end result? How magical is it? The kundalini is transmuted sexual energy expanding into all areas of one's body and being. Once fully understood and with the correct nutritional support, lifestyle, etc. the raising of the kundalini is 100% safe, most desirable, most natural and most beautiful. When one is vibrant and healthy to the extent one feels immense bliss and expanding "space" or extreme lightness in every cell of the body, that effect can be considered a form of kundalini awakening. A kundalini awakening as a natural consequence of favorable healthy conditions is a truly wonderful experience. The awakening of kundalini can eventually lead to having great powers, and even immense changes in one's physical cells. Kundalini Complications and Consequences

There is much anxiety, misunderstanding and mystery regarding the subject of kundalini problems. For some honest clarification on anxiety, diet, kundalini complications, mental health, and importance of leading a balanced lifestyle, go here. If it is forced to awaken by drugs and/or loss of sexual fluids while not eating correctly, then real problems can occur such as severe nerve damage, burning sensations, feeling overwhelmed with too much energy, and/or sensing impending doom, going crazy and out of control. As with all things, one always needs to take as much "holistic" care of one's health as possible. One should always stay as far away from recreational drugs as one can which are notorious for creating extreme anxiety and other terrible emotional and nervous problems. One's health should never be neglected!

Over the next three decades, Paramahansa Yogananda contributed in far-reaching ways to a greater awareness and appreciation in the West of the spiritual wisdom of the East. About the Author - Marshall Govindan has practiced Kriya Yoga intensively as a disciple of Babaji since 1969. He studied and practiced Kriya Yoga in India for nearly four years with Yogi S.A.A.
